R18LabQMS and other quality management systems

A question that comes up from time to time is, “Can I use R18LabQMS to manage other quality standards, i.e. ASTM D3666, ASTM E329, or ISO 17025?”  This question was presented recently by an assessor who commented that it would be of great value if this was built into the application. Well, the good news is that while much of the information and requirements for these standards are already contained in the R18LabQMS application (once completed), our Quality Manual is geared toward and designed around AASHTO R18 and the Quality Manual tab.

Adding other QMS criteria

The quality manual section within the application is made of sections that correspond to AASHTO R18. These sections are managed at a ‘system level’ where each section is reviewed annually and updated in the event there are changes to the Standard. The user can create custom sections to accommodate any other requirements; including laboratory SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures) and sections that may correspond to other Quality Standards.

When adding custom sections to the QMS, you can create chapters, sections, subsections and minor subsections. Other options are title, WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) and file upload. This allows the user to customize the application to meet their specific requirements.

Back to the question

Will the R18LabQMS application ever be updated to meet the requirements and guidelines of other QMS Standards? The short answer is, Yes. There will most likely be an additional tab added that is dedicated to a specific QMS Standard, following its guidelines similar to the way the Quality Manual tab is structured for AASHTO R18. We will keep you informed as we move forward. Stay tuned!

User questions

Q: Can we have an electronic signature throughout the application, specifically for equipment procedures?”

A: No. Currently, on equipment cal/check/standard/maintenance procedures, there is a line titled ‘signature’ that is a required field. The person completing the procedure types their name in there. However, we are looking into an electronic signature requirement that would identify the person logged in. Look for more information on this in upcoming blog entries.
